Meditation to Look at Yourself Through Kinder Eyes

I find it strange that more often than not we are so kind to others, yet terribly critical of ourselves. On average we experience 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day. It’s sad (but true) that a majority of those thoughts can be cruel, and even harmful to ourselves.

To a certain extent, we live in our heads and sometimes that is NOT the nicest place to be. I tell myself things like “you’re too big” or “you don’t do enough” both of which my rational brain knows is not true. The emotional brain, however, cannot distinguish the difference between thoughts and reality. What you think is what you feel, and what you feel is true.

We repeatedly say things to ourselves that we would never in a million years say to close friends & family. Why is that? In the brain we have something called the ‘default mode network’. It is the neurological basis for the self. This consists of the narratives you tell yourself about the world and your place in it. A collection of stories from past memories & experiences that dictate the present and the level of which you fixate on your future.

The default mode network and how we see ourselves is deep rooted. Complicated. Habitual. And likely comes from a core wound, a place of insecurity, or a childhood trauma.

At the end of the day, one of the closest relationships we will ever have is the one we have with our brains. No one knows the inner workings of your mind. Only you. It’s intimate. And if we truly want the best for ourselves, we need to learn how to infuse kindness and compassion into the interactions that take place in our minds.

This practice is about creating a safe space in your own head. Working to shift the way you view yourself in the hopes of looking at yourself through kinder eyes. It may be tough at first, but see if you can try. If we work on it over time, maybe one day we’ll get there. And our minds will become a space we genuinely love to be, as opposed to somewhere we run away from.

Let’s meditate on it! Here’s to looking at ourselves through kinder eyes
