How Meditation Changes Your Brain

 

I’ve never the most science-driven person. I found meditation, practicing it made me feel good & that was that. When I started to study & undergo meditation training my perspective on this completely changed. I became such a nerd for neuroscience and was fascinated by how meditation can legitimately change the structure of your brain.

We can achieve this just by sitting, breathing, and allowing ourselves to relax. Pretty cool, right!?

The reason we feel better, lighter & happier when we practice is not just placebo. There are neurological, scientifically proven effects when it comes to brain health and meditation. The more we meditate, the more the grey matter in our brain changes which ultimately leads to us feeling and acting like better, calmer, more loving versions of ourselves. 

Our brains are neuroplastic which means that they aren’t fixed. They can & do change based on our habits and new neural connections can be formed.

I’ll keep this simple & sweet because I know you want to get to the good stuff

Here’s the rundown...

When we meditate;

  • Grey matter in the prefrontal cortex INCREASES. This slows the aging of our brains and leads to clear decision making.

  • Grey matter in amygdala DECREASES. The amygdala is the center of the brain associated with fear, emotional regulation and stress. This determines how well we are able to be resilient, and cope with situations that are thrown at us. Smaller the amygdala, the calmer we respond. 

  • Grey matter in hippocampus INCREASES. This center of the brain is associated with learning, memory, and emotion regulation. More grey matter in this area = better overall brain health, as well as long term prevention of dementia. 

  • Your brain learns how to secrete more serotonin and dopamine - these are the “happy hormones” that help with mood regulation. Yet another reason to keep your meditation strong!
